Our Team

  • Emily Slavin, President

Emily lives in Carver, MA with her husband, Rick and two children (Brooke, 15 and Shawn, 11). Emily has always had a passion for volunteering. After losing her son Brady only an hour after he was born, she knew her calling was to help others. Emily started her volunteering during the holidays by organizing present and food drives so that families in the Quincy and Carver areas would not go without during the holidays. Her volunteering was taken to a different level when a close friend from high schools son was battling Ewing Sarcoma at the age of 15. Emily got involved with a local nonprofit where she volunteered for many years helping spread awareness and funds in memory of Zach Kane. Emily learned a lot from this nonprofit and dreamed of opening her own someday. Volunteering has taught Emily and her family so many things and allowed them to meet so many amazing people while making a difference. Emily is excited to see the impact South Shore Action for Hope will have on the lives of so many. When Emily is not volunteering, she wears many hats, including part-time recreation coordinator for the Town of Carver, Account Manager for MEDITECH and even wearing waders picking cranberry bogs for her family.

  • Suzy Golden, Vice President

Suzy lives in Plymouth, MA with her husband, Andrew, and two children (Callie, 11 and AJ, 6). Suzy was initially inspired to volunteer by the story of childhood cancer survivor Charlee Casale. More recently, Suzy has decided to focus her fundraising efforts towards Type 1 Diabetes after her daughter Callie was diagnosed in September 2020. When she is not volunteering for SSAFH, Suzy is a speech-language pathologist and the owner of Golden Speech Therapy in Plymouth.

  • Jaime Bryer, Secretary

Jaime lives in Carver, MA with her husband, Dave, and two children, David (13) and Jared (7). When Jaime is not volunteering, you can find her engaged in a variety of family activities including, helping out at her children’s sporting events, vacationing or cuddling her oversized lap dog, Brady.

When Jaime was first introduced to the “go Gold For Hope” fundraiser, she was saddened to hear the many stories of how the children lose so much of their childhood while they are battling an unforgiving disease such as childhood cancer. Since then, she has been passionate about bringing awareness and raising funds for research throughout Carver and the surrounding communities.

Jaime is especially excited about bringing awareness for the newest campaign on Mental Health. Like a lot of people, this one really hits home for her.

Her hope is that through the efforts of herself and many others involved, they can help ease some of the burden for the children and their families.

  • Tricia Murphy, Treasurer

Tricia lives in Carver with her husband and two children. When Tricia is not keeping the books for South Shore Action for Hope, she works for the school system in Marshfield. Tricia is passionate about volunteering and South Shore Action for Hope is lucky to have her.

  • Katy Kane, Board Member

Katy lives in Carver, MA with her husband Steve. They lost their 15 year old son, Zach, to Ewing Sarcoma in 2015, which motivated her to fundraise for better treatments and research for childhood cancers, as well as other childhood diseases. Katy is a huge lover of dogs and enjoys spending time with her family and friends as much as possible. When she is not volunteering, Katy works in the IT field for a local healthcare company.

  • Marianne Speakman, Board Member

Marianne lives in Carver with her husband, Mike, step-sons (Curran, 21 and Dylan, 19) and her daughter (Karolyne, 8). Marianne enjoys volunteering as a way to fulfill her desire to make a difference in promoting awareness of all kinds of childhood illness and disease. When she is not volunteering, Marianne is a registered nurse at a local hospital.

  • Rachel Casale, Board Member

Rachel lives in Plymouth, MA with her husband, Matt and four children (Charlee, Delaney, Drew, and Austin). Rachel’s oldest daughter, Charlee, is a childhood cancer survivor. Charlee was diagnosed in December of 2014, at the age of 2, with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and battled cancer for 2.5 years as a patient at Boston Children’s Hospital and the Jimmy Fund Clinic. Today, Charlee is 6 years in remission and 4 years off treatment and she is thriving. Since Charlee’s diagnosis, Rachel’s passion for advocating for children battling cancer grew while volunteering with a local nonprofit. Rachel is thrilled to be a part of South Shore Action for Hope and cannot wait to see the impact it has on many lives. When she is not volunteering, Rachel is a Compliance Specialist at a Pharmaceutical company.

  • Sherry Harrell, Board Member

Sherry lives in Acushnet with her husband Josh and their two fur babies Fenway and Bruin.

For almost a decade, Sherry coached multiple sports teams, volunteered at many school events, served on the PTO and sat on the Carver baseball board. She has an innate desire to help others, especially our next generation, in attempt to make the world a better place; it’s what she wants to be remembered for.

In 2018, she met Katy Kane and was humbled by her family’s experience and strength. Sherry was immediately motivated to actively support the “Go Gold for Hope” campaign. This introduced Sherry to a community of people that represent what “Hope” and “Action” truly mean - people who have the same desire as her.

This group exposed Sherry to the saddening facts around Childhood cancer, making her more “aware” of all the work and research that needs to be accomplished so our children will stop dying from this disgusting disease.

As she’d expect, this group didn’t stop there! She is thrilled to be one of the many bringing awareness to other diseases such as childhood diabetes and mental health - issues that impact almost every family in our community.

Sherry is looking forward to expansion of more awareness campaigns in the future.

When Sherry isn’t volunteering, she enjoys reading, playing instruments, dancing, traveling and cuddling with her pups. Most importantly, she loves being a ‘Tia’ to all the children in her life!
